LaCASU Raises Alcohol Awareness on LSU Campus

LSU, BATON ROUGE, La (April 2014) - April is Alcohol Awareness Month,
sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc.,
and is designed to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma
and encourage communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues.
The Louisiana Center Addressing Substance Use in Collegiate Communities
(LaCASU) works year round to promote these same ideals but wanted to launch
a campaign in the spring that would really drive its cause home.
LaCASU has been awarded $2,000 from Social Norming for Alcohol Prevention
(SNAP) to design a campaign to create awareness of Louisiana State
Universitys students drinking habits. LaCASUs campaign, Kneaux Your Limit,
encourages students to drink more responsibly and to always be aware of
surroundings.
Instead of promoting the message of zero tolerance, we [LaCASU] really
wanted to bring more awareness and education to the risks involved with alcohol
use through a more effective harm reduction approach. We know some students
are going to drink, we just want them to be more cautious and safe while doing
it, Associate Director Allison Smith said.
Through the Kneaux Your Limit campaign, LaCASU held four events in the LSU
community between March 25 and April 1 to generate awareness of the harms of
alcohol and to promote awareness of Alcohol Awareness Month.

The first two events were held the week of March 23 for LSU students on
campus. On March 25 and March 27, LaCASU promoted its Kneaux Your Limit
campaign in Free Speech Alley, located in between the LSU Student Union and
the parade grounds.
The Kneaux How To Survive Spring Break event on March 25 was designed to
target freshmen and sophomore students with facts and advice for having fun
while also staying safe on spring break. The Kneaux How To Help event on
March 27 was designed to target junior and senior students to promote better
ways to help their peers in different situations involving substance use.
The Kneaux Your Limit campaign held its main event on April 1 at Bogies in
Baton Rouge, La. This event incorporated trivia that helped attendees learn facts
and tips related to alcohol awareness, as well as fun prizes for spring break,
which started on April 3 for LSU students. The Kneaux Your Limit campaigns
main goal was to raise awareness of alcohol safety in a fun, interesting way.
