Pre-Engineered Buildings
January 2001

Welcome to
Zamil Steel
Pre-Engineered
Buildings Division

Zamil Steel was founded in 1977

to design, manufacture and supply top quality pre-engineered
steel buildings for use as factory buildings, warehouses, workshops, distribution centers, showrooms, aircraft hangars, schools,
sports halls, supermarkets,
office buildings, car parking
sheds, and virtually any one, two
or three storey building.
The most notable advantages of
pre-engineered buildings are
low initial investment, fast construction time, low maintenance
cost, large clear spans, infinite
choice of layouts, inherent resistance to earthquakes, ease of
future expansion, and unique attractive appearance.

Boveri Group), built a state of

the art plant for the manufacture and galvanizing of steel
lattice towers used for electrical transmission and telecommunications.
Today the company is organized in three divisions; the PreEngineered Buildings Division,
the Structural Steel Division, and
the Steel Lattice Towers Division.
Each division is headed by a
Vice President or General Manager with each division having
its own marketing and sales
staff, customer service staff, engineering staff, and manufacturing plant. Support departments such as Administration,
Finance, Purchasing, Transport,
Information Technology, Quality
Assurance and Facilities Engineering are shared by the three
divisions. The division heads
and the managers of the support departments report directly
to the President and Senior Vice
President of Zamil Steel.
In addition to its large pre-engineered steel building factory
in Saudi Arabia, in 1999 Zamil
Steel commissioned two more
state-of-the-art pre-engineered
steel building factories; one in
Egypt and one in Vietnam.

Zamil Steels plant for pre-engineered steel buildings

is located on a 74,000 m 2 site in Dammam, Saudi
Arabia. It has a production capacity of 6,000 M.T.
of Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings per month.
The facility has 40,000 m 2 of covered manufacturing
space and 8,000 m 2 of offices.

In 1984 Zamil Steel con-structed

a dedicated struc-tural steel
plant and became Saudi Arabias preferred fabricator of
structural steel for power plants,
desalination plants, petrochemical plants, and steel mills.

Strength in
Engineering

Zamil Steel plays a deliberate

and active role in converting complex and expensive
conventional steel building
designs into simpler and
more economically designed
pre-engineered buildings
without sacrificing the utility
and function of these buildings.
Today, Zamil Steels engineering innovations represent the
standard that other PEB
companies aspire to reach.
Th e e nt i re e n g i n e e r i n g
process is computerized and
networked. Every engineer/
detailer uses a computer for
100% of his output.

DS-0368 Hadeed steel rolling mill extension. Zamil

Steels PEB design for this 4,500 M.T. project resulted in
significant savings to the general contractor. An 18 m
eave height, 12 m bay lengths and the presence of more
than 10 crane systems ranging in capacity from 6 M.T. to
25 M.T. represented an opportunity for Zamil Steel to
demonstrate its engineering expertise, attention to detail
and fast track culture.

This 60 m wide (clear span) x 490 m long x 27 m (peak

the pre-engineered building system. A horizontal beam
below the peak supports a conveyor that runs along the
full length of the building. The roof and walls are clad
with 50 mm insulated PVF2 coated sandwich panels.

Engineering groups are located in 4 different countries and

are all electronically connected. Engineering output consists of
design calculations, approval drawings, erection drawings, shop
details and bills of materials.

Zamil Steel design calculations are comprehensive yet

easy to understand. Explanations and references precede
every part of the calculations
to enable consultants, worldwide, to understand every
facet of the design of a Zamil
Steel pre-engineered building.

A Culture Based
on Innovation

Every member of the PEB division, be it at the head office or the sales offices, is

Basic Building
Parameters

Zamil Steel pre-engineered

buildings are custom designed
to meet your exact requirements. The basic parameters
that define a pre-engineered
building are :
Building Width : No matter
what primary framing system
is used, the building width is
defined as the distance from
outside of eave strut of one
sidewall to outside of eave
strut of the opposite sidewall.

For more details refer to the Zamil Steels

Technical Manual for Pre-Engineered
Buildings.

BUILDING WIDTH

Building Length : The distance between the outside

flanges of endwall columns in
opposite endwalls is considered the building length.
Building length is a combination of several bay lengths.

Th e m o s t c o m m on b ay
lengths are 6 m, 7.5 m and
9 m. Any bay length up to
15 m is possible.
Building Height : Building
height is the eave height
w h i c h u s u a l ly i s t h e
distance from the bottom of
the main frame column base
plate to the top outer point
o f t h e e ave s t r u t . E ave
heights up to 30 m are
possible. When columns are
recessed or elevated from
finished floor, eave height is
the distance from finished
floor level to top of eave strut.
Roof Slope (x/10) : This is
the angle of the roof with
respect to the horizontal. The
most common roof slopes are
0.5/10 and 1/10. Any practical
roof slope is possible.

Design Loads :

Building Width: Whenever possible make building width a

multiple of 3 m. This is because roof purlins are spaced at
1.5 m on centers and 3 m is equal to two purlin spacings
one on each side of the ridge.

Unless otherwise specified

Zamil Steel pre-engineered
buildings are designed for the
following minimum loads :
Roof Live Load: 0.57 kN/m2
Design Wind Speed:110 km/h

Design for snow loads, earthquake loads, collateral loads,

or any other local climatic

condition (if required) must
be specified at time of
quotation.
Loads are applied in accordance with the latest
American codes and standa rd s ap p l i c a b le to p re engineered buildings unless
otherwise requested at the
time of quotation.

Primary
Framing Systems

The most common primary framing systems are shown below. All are shown
symmetrical about the ridge line. Framing systems unsymetrical about
the ridge line and Multispan Framing Systems with unequal width
modules are possible but may require more engineering time and possibly longer deliveries. Practically any frame geometry is possible. Consult a

The standard Zamil Steel

mezzanine framing system
consists of a steel deck
supported by joists framed
onto main mezzanine beams.
If required by design loads,
the main beams shall also be
supported by intermediate
columns. The top flange of
the joists fits immediately
below the top flange of the
primary beams.
The economy of a mezzanine
system is affected by the
applied loads (dead, live and
collateral) and mezzanine
column spacing. Consult a
Zamil Steel representative for
advice on the most economical mezzanine design.

Mezzanine
Systems

W h e re ve r p o s s i b l e , t h e
primary mezzanine beams
should run across the width
of the building and be
located under the main
frame rafters. Joists should

purlins along the length of
the building.

interior equipment platforms,
catwalks and staircases may
