Project III

Numerical Analysis (TA5011)

Topic:
One dimensional GW flow modeling supporting slope stability analysis

Objective:

To apply 1D PDE on a real problem,

To apply numerical method for PDE using implicit and Crank-Nicholson method,
To apply numerical method for SLE using matrix operation,
To show ability on scripting using MatLab,
To employ numerical method in small geoscience / geoengineering case.

Data:
In PT KJA mining area, modeling of 1D GW flow in sub vertical relative thick sand layer
was conducted to support GW dewatering for slope stability improvement. The sub
vertical sand layer together with mudstone layers form West side slope of Pit Roto that
strikes 6 km SE-NW. Almost 3 km long South section of West slope has already been
unstable. The sand layer is about 350 meters thick (m) striking SE-NW. Initial GW table in
the sand was predicted at 570 msl. It has to be lowered down to 420 msl ( 150 meters
drawdon) in order to get optimum safety factor of the slope greater than 1 within the
unstable South section. To the South, the sub vertical sand layer acrosses a stream bed
with surface water levels at 600 msl. The stream water has been assummed not being
influenced by GW dewatering in the sand layer. To the North, at the boundary of the Pit
Roto, the sub vertical acrosses also a stream bed with surface water at 610 msl that has
been assumed not being influenced by GW dewatering. The hydraulic conductivity (K)
and specific coefficient (Ss) of the sand layer are 10-05 m/sec and 0.1 0.2 respectively.
