By the end of this unit, my students will be able to compare and contrast electromagnets from permanent magnets. By reaching this goal, this will allow my students to improve their score by 50% or more on their post-assessment. This unit on magnets is part of a larger unit that deals with electricity.

Based on the data collected in my pre-assessment, I have developed a goal statement
that I hope to accomplish during this seven day unit on magnetism. By the end of this unit, my students will understand and apply the correct vocabulary terms such as repel, attract, north and south pole, when discussing magnets. My students will be able to compare and contrast electromagnets from permanent magnets, as well as analyze the differences between the magnetic fields of both types of magnets. By reaching this goal, this will allow my students to improve their score by 50% or more on their post-assessment. Based on the given pre-test, I have tailored my instruction in order to meet the goals I have set for my class. I have already mentioned the large focus I want to put on the correct vocabulary when discussing the properties of magnets. It is important that they know exactly what repel and attract means and how to use it when talking about opposite or like poles. This unit on magnets is part of a larger unit that deals with electricity. The information that is taught during the magnetism unit is a baseline for what is taught and expected for students to learn during the electricity unit. It is important that students understand this vocabulary now so when they need to use it again in the future they already have a strong understanding. I also feel that it is vital to spend extra time on the difficult concepts like electromagnets and magnetic fields. Since the students already have a basic understanding of magnets, I will only spend one class discussing this material and then using the rest of my time to go in depth about the more difficult concepts.
