Description of Student

Dennis

Dennis is a sweet and loving

third grade boy. His strengths
are in mathematics and
concern and empathy for
others, especially adults.
Dennis has been diagnosed
with Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder and Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder. He was
found eligible for special
education services as a student
with an emotional impairment.
Although he has a very
empathetic nature, Dennis has
escalated from sad/withdrawn
into oppositional/defiant
behaviors. When presented
with a request or activity which
he doesnt want to do, he often
will refuse the request, destroys
materials, attempts to leave,
uses inappropriate language,
makes threats, hurts himself,
slams doors and refuses to
move. Small Transitions
throughout the day are difficult
for him, and any minor
disturbance will set him back
emotionally and has difficulty
recovering.
Orin is a sweet and loveable
second grade boy who has
good manners, a great sense of
humor and a great smile. He
enjoys being helpful and has
good verbal skills. He is also

Orin

How are you applying your knowledge and skills to meet the
unique cognitive, behavioral, and/or cultural needs of each
student?
Dennis has a behavior plan and through the Orion Program, school
social work services are available to Dennis throughout his school day.
These services are available for him to seek help in processing worries,
concerns, or strong emotions in order to build positive behavior
supports and skills. To assist Dennis in transitions, we use a 5 minute
timer. He is alerted when the timer is set and when it goes off he knows
to expect getting to work. When behaviors present themselves, Dennis
is presented the option to take a break. Denis also receives constant
rewards for good behavior.

Throughout the school day, Orin is provided with supports and prompts
to interact in a positive manner with adults/peers. Currently Orin is in
the process of partaking in a social skills training, Skill streaming. Every
day when Orin enters the classroom, he determines his emotions by
choosing from a list of emotions. During this time he also is presented
with the option of napping during the hour of catchup/free learning.

great at recognizing strengths
in others. Orin receives special
education services as a student
with emotional impairment and
was recently diagnosed with
advanced phase sleep disorder
which is most commonly found
in elderly gentlemen. This
affects many aspects of his
education. Orin frequently
sleeps during school hours.
When he is tired he has a
negative mood, is easily
bothered by the behavior of
peers and argues with
peers/adults. He makes
unnecessary negative
comments and has a negative
affect. Orin copes with
challenges by using avoidance
behaviors and copes with
stressors of peer relationships
by pouting, complaining or
whining. Orin also commonly
overreacts and assumes the
worst when dealing with
everyday occurrences. His
behavior interferes with his
ability to participate in the
general education setting due
to his behavioral outbursts and
negative affect. His inability to
cope with frustrations interferes
with his ability to maintain
relationships with his peers.
