Daily Topic: Baseball


Subject: Math
Approximate time needed:
Sixty-minute class period
Student Learning Objective: Students discover the connection
between math and baseball.
Prerequisites:
1. Students should be able to complete simple math problems.
2. Students should be able to navigate a computer.
3. Should be able to navigate Kidpix
Procedures:
1. Teachers will first become familiar with the game of baseball.
Paying particular attention to the dimensions of the field.
2. Teacher will then introduce the topic: Baseball fans use math
every day for entertainment. We are going to explore some ways
that we can use the game to practice math.
3. The teacher then begins to ask questions such as:
a. How would baseball be different if math were eliminated
from the sport?
b. Could you become a successful ballplayer without being
competent in math?
4. Students will then break into groups of two and discuss the
teachers questions.
5. The teacher will then go over the dynamics of the field,
baselines, and minutes of the game.
6. Technology Activity: The students will then each get on a
computer and go to funbrain.com. There they will participate in
math problems and strive to get a home run.
7. Technology Activity: Each student will then make Kid Pix with a
math problem on it and explain it to the class.
8. After each students has presented their problems the teacher
will then make sure that each students has learned and
understands the connection between math and baseball.
