Ms.

Chelsea Decker LESSON/ASSESSMENT #4 FOR 12TH GRADE

Lesson Plan: Pre-calculus (Functions)

Type of Classroom: 12th Graders

Age Range of Students: 17-18 years old
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Solving and Graphing Functions
Instructional Arrangement: Individual
Type of Lesson: Introduction

Task at Hand:
How is the domain and range of a function, determined from the graph of the
function?

Objectives:
Procedure: (30 minutes)

SWBAT/GOAL:

First we will discuss what a function is

We will go over domain and how it effects a function
o The domain is the x-axis
o Find the domain of the function
o Will the function move to the left or the right of the graph?
We will go over range and how it effects a function
o The range is the y-axis
o Find the range of the function
o Will the function move up or down the graph?
Determine whether a function is a relation
o What is a relation?
Define what a parabola is
o We will see examples of parabolas
o We will see examples that are linear
o We will see functions that are exponential
o We will compare all functions to determine differences

Ms. Chelsea Decker LESSON/ASSESSMENT #4 FOR 12TH GRADE

We will identify parts if a parabola based on the equation of the

function
o This will help us see why the change in x or y change the graph
o Convert from one form of a quadratic function to another.
o Investigating Quadratic Functions Activity on Graphing Calculator

Common Core State Standards of Mathematics:

Pre-Calculus Unit One Functions and Their Graphs

F.BF.1. Write a function that describes a relationship between two

quantities. F.IF.7. Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key
features of the graph, by hand in the simple cases and using
technology for more complicated cases.
Introduction to Functions (F.BF.1)
Graphs of Functions (F.BF.1, F.IF.7)
Quadratic Functions (F.BF.1, F.IF.7)

Modifications:

Students with disabilities or special education needs will be given charts, and graphs half
completed. They will not be responsible for drawing the entire graph or function on their
own. Students will only determine the values for x and the values for y.

Ms. Chelsea Decker LESSON/ASSESSMENT #4 FOR 12TH GRADE

Assessment:
Closed Tasks: Multiple choice, fill in the blank, true or false, and just solve (mathematics).
Every teacher uses tests, quizzes, and homework as a form of
assessment. Its one of the easiest ways to see where your students are, and
if they are on track. When I grade the tests I pick the questions that most of
the students got incorrect, and we spend some more time coving those
topics. This way they will really understand it when the final exam comes
around. If any student has a specific question regarding anything on any test
or quiz their questions are also all welcomed. Assessments are really
important if you want all of your students to work to their fullest potential. I
will work hard, and use a variety of assessments to make sure every student
has their moment to shine. This form of closed tasks assessments allows me
to test their knowledge against a rubric. This rubric will help me understand
were each and every child is, and what specific topics might just need some
more going over. Each test will include different areas of thinking. I will have
four different areas of the test. The first area of the test will test the
students ability to recognize a math equation and determine which formula
to use. The second area of the test will test the students ability to write
down steps thoroughly, and show work. The third area will test the students
ability to identify a function based off of looking at a graph. Finally the last
section of the test will test the students ability of time management.
