Literature Circle Roles

Discussion Facilitator:
This student is responsible for writing down everything the group talks about during the
discussion. It is also this students job to direct the discussion, keep track of the students work,
and ensure that each group member has a voice in the discussion. This student can pause the
discussion and seek teacher support if the discussion becomes heated or uncontrollable.
Vocabulary Enricher:
This student is responsible for identifying key words in the story. Vocabulary selected should
focus on words that are unfamiliar, interesting, significant, repetitive or unusual. The student
should have a brief description of why he/she selected each word and its importance to the
bigger themes in the text.
Summarizer:
This student must prepare a brief summary of the days reading. The summary should be short
and comprehensive while highlighting the key points of the assigned pages. If there are several
main ideas or events to remember, bullet points may prove useful.
Connector:
This student is responsible for finding connections between the text and the outside world. This
can mean connecting the reading to his/her own life, happenings in school or in the community,
other books they have read, other writings by the same author, or similar events at other times
and places.
Literary Luminary:
This students job is choosing parts of the story that he/she wants to read out loud to the group.
This is so that the group can remember some interesting or powerful sections of the text. This
student must decide which passages or paragraphs are worth reading out loud and also bring in a
reason for selecting them.
Fortune Teller:
This student should make informed predictions about events that could occur later in the text.
These informed predictions should have textual evidence to support the claims.
