WHAT IS LISTENING SKILL?

(SCANS, 2000): Listening is the way listener receives, attends to,

interprets, and responds to verbal messages and other cues such as

body language in ways that are appropriate to the purpose (e.g.,
comprehend, learn, critically evaluate, appreciate, or support a
speaker).
(Prince

of Songkla University, 2006): Listening is considered as an

activity in which listeners employ a variety of processes in trying to
comprehend information from oral texts, listeners construct
meaning from the passage and relate what they hear to their
existing knowledge.

(Clark,

2005): Listening is defined as a form of communication that

involves hearing, interpreting, and constructing meanings; an active
process that is not limited to the spoken word; and an essential way of
participating in daily routines as well as wider decision-making processes

Hyslop

and Tone (1989) define listening as: The first

language mode that children acquire. It provides a
foundation for all aspects of language and cognitive
development, and it plays a life-long role in the
process of learning and communication essential to
productive participation in life.

Rost

(2002) defines listening in its broadest sense, as a

process of receiving what the speaker actually says
(receptive orientation); constructing and representing
meaning (constructive orientation); negotiating
meaning
with
the
speaker
and
responding
(collaborative orientation); and creating meaning with
existing knowlge through involvement, imagination
and empathy (transformative orientation).
