Alliteration Poems

Grade: 5th
Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.5 - Demonstrate understanding of figurative language,
word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
Objective: Students will be able to write poems about themselves using alliterations of the first
letter of their first name
Materials:
Chart Paper
Writers Notebooks
Pencils
Chromebooks
Procedure
Lesson Introduction:
o Students will be gathered at the carpet.
o Boys and girls, we know you have all had a tiring morning so we wanted to do
something fun for our last day with you all. Today we are going to be using alliterations
to write fun and silly poems about ourselves.
Teach and Model:
o First of all we want to go over with you what an alliteration is. Does anybody have any
idea?
o An alliteration is the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of each or
most of the words in a sentence.
o Because we will be writing poems about ourselves today, we (Miss Rakos & Miss
Hajrah) started by thinking of some words that start with the same letters as our names.
o Using some of these words, we came up with these as our poems.
o Show students our poems
Guided Practice:
o Now we want you to take a moment to think of some words that describe you or are
relevant to something about you that begin with the same letter as your first name. They
can be all different parts of speech like nouns, adjectives, verbs, or adverbs. Jot a few of
your favorites down in your notebook. Then turn and talk with a neighbor about the
words you have chosen. Raise your hand if you are having difficulty coming up with
words, raise your hand and we will come and help.
Independent Practice:
o Now we would like you to return to your seats, open a new document on your
Chromebooks, and make your own alliteration poem about yourself. It can be silly or
serious.
Mid-Workshop Interruption:
o Whats wrong with this one? (3 word poem)

o We can fix it by adding more adjectives.


o When you think you are done with your poem, raise your hand and we will come over
and let you know if it is ready to add illustrations.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on their ability to come up with words and make a poem using
alliterations.
