    WASHINGTONDCYesterday,theSupremeCourtheardoralargumentsonfourmarriageequalitycasesan
    importantstepinthemovementtowardwinningfullLGBTQequalityunderthelaw.FormanyLGBTQindividuals,
    however,thedaywascomplicatedbythepainfulreminderoftheongoingfighttoendpolicebrutalityand
    stateimposedviolenceaspeopletooktothestreetsofBaltimorejust40milesnorthofDC.

    Yesterdayhighlightedthestarkinequitybredbysystemicracism,transphobia,andclassismandtheuprisingthat
    happenswhenthoseconditionsareignoredattheexpenseofcommunitiesnotjustinBaltimore,butacrossthe
    country.

    Yetevenasmarriageequalityhascomewithinreach,wehaveseenhowLGBTQpeoplefaceincredibleobstacles
    beyondtheirrighttomarrywiththedeepestimpactofoppressionanddiscriminationexperiencedbyblack
    transgenderwomen,aswellaspeopleofcolorandtranspeoplemorebroadly.Wehaveseenhowtheissuesof
    unjustdetentionanddeportationhaveaffectedthelivesofqueerandtransimmigrantslikeNicoll
    HernandezPolanco,andhowracistpolicingandcriminalizationofblackpeoplehasledtotheincarcerationofKy
    PetersonandAshleyDiamond.Wehavealsoseentheramificationsofasystemdeeplyunconcernedwiththelives
    oftranswomenofcolor,asatleastsixtranswomenofcolorweremurderedinthefirstthreemonthsof2015alone.
    WhilemarriageequalityisanimportantstepfortheLGBTQcommunity,itisnottheendofthefightforequalityits
    justthebeginning.

    ThisiswhyGetEQUALdemandsnotonlymorethanmarriage,butfullfederalequalityforallLGBTQpeople.
    GetEQUALiscallingonthoseLGBTQadvocatesandorganizationsthathaveworkedhardtomakefederalmarriage
    equalityarealitytoworkjustashardforallLGBTQpeoplelivingtheirlivesattheintersectionsofmultipleidentities,
    whoserightsarejustasfundamentaltothestrengthofthemovement.

    GetEQUALsspecificagendaisreflectedintherecentlylaunchedLGBTQBillofRightsadocumentproducedover
    ayear'sworthofconversationswithLGBTQpeopleonthegroundacrossthecountry.TheLGBTQBillofRights

    )outlinesthemanywaysinwhichLGBTQpeopleneedmorethansimplymarriage
    equalityfromanendtoreligiousdiscriminationtofullaccesstohealthcaretofreedomfrompolicebrutality,
    deportation,anddetention.Aswemoveforward,potentiallyintoamomentwheremarriageequalityisareality,we
    stillmustgrapplewiththeoppressionanddiscriminationthataffectsLGBTQpeople.LGBTQpeopledeservea
    movementthatfightsfortheentirecommunitynoexceptions,andnocaveats.

    "Yesterday'srallyonthestepsoftheSupremeCourtwasabeautifulexampleofthediversityofstories,experiences,
    andidentitieswithintheLGBTQcommunityanditwasalsoadeeplytroublingreminderofhowfarwemustgoand
    howhardwemustworktoensurethatmarriageisnottheendofourmovement'sroad,"saidHeatherCronk,
    codirectorofGetEQUAL."Whileweholdsignsandraisebannersdemandingafreedomofharassmentfromthe
    governmentoutsidetheSupremeCourt,wemustalsotakethatdemandtopolicedepartmentsandcityhallsand
    detentioncentersacrossthecountry.Wearenotfreeuntileveryoneofusisfreeandwewillcontinuetotaketo
    thestreetsuntilweareallabletotastefreedom."
