# 4/ 5

Name: Hunter Drendel

DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title:

Class Mosaic

Grade Level: 2nd

Skills: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual
art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching, and constructing by
adding grout to their mosaic and figuring out how their piece will continue to serve
its purpose (26.B.2d).
Students will know how images, sounds, and movements convey stories about
people, places, and times by using their own mosaic to convey a message (27.B.1).

Overall Lesson Objective:

The overall theme for this lesson is Social Studies theme 1 Culture, which states Social
studies programs should include experiences that provide for the study of culture and
cultural diversity. In this lesson, students were highly diverse in their choices of color,
placement of grout, and technique. The culture that was created in the classroom was
highly diverse, not just by the students in the classroom, but also stemming from the ideas
and designs that the students used for their mosaic.
Day 2.
Objective One: Students will be able to mix the grout
Objective Two: Students will be able to place grout in between tiles to finish the mosaic
Objective Three: Students will be able to wipe off excess grout and sponge it to be a finish
product
Daily Objectives/Essential Question/Academic Language:
This lesson would be multiple days, probably 4-5. Start from learning to mosaic, to creating
a mosaic, to piecing together the class, then explaining and telling the class why specific
designs were done the way they were.
Essential question:
Day 1: What does your drawing tell you about yourself and how did you use your
imagination to create something that you can call your own?
Day 2: With this final drawing can you mosaic in between the lines?
Day 3: Do you feel comfortable grouting your plywood?
Day 4: With the colors you used, what does that add to your piece?

Student Activities

ARTE 342: Lesson Plan (revised 3/15)

3

Introduction:
Students will be given a demonstration about
how to grout. They materials that each group
will be given will be the water, rationed grout,
and a mixing utensil. They will be taught how
to mix the materials, as well as add different
colors to the mixture, and then apply it to
their plywood and tile. Once the demo is
complete, students will go back to their seats
and work in groups to make their mixture of
grout.

Development:
Students will be start mixing new colored
grout. The will be given a set of directions for
an extra reminder for how to grout. A
demonstration will be needed for how to wipe
away excess colored grout. Each bucket will
be a different color. Its encouraged that
students block out colors for specific designs
so the design is clear and outlined. Reference
from their white paper design is also
encouraged!

Conclusion:
As the lesson comes to a close, students will keep
their pieces of plywood on the paper that covers the
table, throw out any extra grout left over, and clean
off their hands. All materials may be handled by
teacher, since they are delicate.

page

Students will listen and fully pay attention

to the demonstration so they know how to
proceed with the task. In order for
students to finish grouting today they
must understand how to and how fast to
work to grout their entire piece.

Students will start by sitting at their seats,

and work in groups on 2 or 4. They will
start by using the materials to mix their
grout and add the color at their station.
Once they mix has been cleared and
thickness is correct, they can start
applying it to their design, in between the
tiles. Grout needs to be pushed all the way
down to the plywood so it has a thickness
to it.
If a student wants a different color, which
is encouraged, there will be extra grout of
colors available and they should ask.
Colors can be passed around when need
be. Also, if grout portion runs out, they can
always make more.
Students will clean up quickly since this
lesson will take majority of the class time.
Extra grout not used shall be put in the
garbage, and the white paper laid on the
tables should also be put in the garbage.
All materials that are not thrown away
should be washed if time permits.
Students work will stay in the classroom
so that it can drive fully for them to take
the last and final step the following class.

FEEDBACK NOTES:
This lesson got very messy! But on the positive side, students really enjoyed getting their
hands dirty and experiencing something new. Next time I would pre-make a few extra
buckets of grout since we ran out at some points. I would also make sure the classroom
management is a bit more controlled. There were a few incidents where students truly
wanted to walk around and see what other classmates were doing, which is great, but I
need to find a way to do it in a controlled manor so that the management is still in my

control. Other then that, I am super excited with this long-term project and how its been
going. One more lesson!
