Students will develop a greater understanding of the writing process.

Paper
Crayons / Markers / Colored Pencils
Pencil
Imagination

Students will draw their very own monsters using a variety of shapes,
colors, and features.

10 minutes

Students will write a detailed paragraph describing their monsters

appearance using steps of the writing process.

10 minutes

Students will pair up, and take turns reading their descriptive paragraphs
to their partners. The students will draw new monsters based on their
partners descriptions.

20 minutes

After both students have shared their descriptive paragraphs with one
another, they will compare their partners pictures with the authors
original picture to see how well they match. This will emphasize the
importance of using descriptive language to accurately represent ideas
(or, in this case, monsters).

5 minutes

As a class, discuss how the descriptive paragraphs can be revised and

edited to add details in order for others to get the right description.
Review the importance of descriptive writing.

10 minutes

ELA-LITERACY.W.3.4

organization are appropriate to task and purpose.
ELA-LITERACY.W.3.5
With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by
planning, revising, and editing.
ELA-LITERACY.L.3
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing
or speaking.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the importance of descriptive writing based on the
accuracy of their descriptions. By sharing their descriptions with other students and comparing the
results to their original drawings, students will be able to check how well their descriptions were. This
lesson requires participation from all sides, and by sharing a discussion of ideas to edit and revise their
paragraphs in order to add more detail, it will show their understanding of the subject.
