Introduction
In my presentation Im going to talk about military deployment to foreign countries, how it affects the
deployed soldiers and their families, how it affects the citizens and how it affects the government. I will
outline the advantages and disadvantages and offer recommendations.

Background
Many countries deploy their soldiers to different countries for different reasons. Some are sincere in
helping but others are motivated by other things like exploration of resources in the country that they
go to. During my research, I have discovered that opinions are divided on whether countries should get
involved in wars that do not affect them. There are mixed reactions and people tend to disagree on this
controversial issue. This issue affects everyone either directly or indirectly. I have decided to look at

one particular country which Im familiar with and that is Kenya.

Kenya is an east african country which is prone to terrorist attacks due to its fight against terrorism.
Their main threat being one of the neighbouring contries Somalia. Somalia is home to Al-Shabaab, a
jihadist terrorist group that pledged allegiance to the militant Islamic organization Al-Qaeda. The
Kenyan government decided to deploy its military to Somalia in 2011 in efforts to restore peace and
help Somalia establish a Government.
In retaliation, the Al-Shabaab has responded with a series of attacks which has led to loss of innocent
lives. The Kenyan military presence in Somalia has borne fruits in that peace and justice is starting to
prevail in the war torn country but this comes at a huge cost by Kenya losing its citizens. The big
question is; should the military remain in Somalia at the expense of the Kenyan citizens but for the
good of many more innocent lives in Somalia or should the military go back to Kenya and secure their

border to protect the Kenyan citizens. I believe that this is an ethical dilemma that needs to be

Advantages
The main advantage that arises from military deployment is peace. They get to ensure peace where they
and go protect innocent citizens from harm. This in turn helps in building relationships between the two
countries and hence promoting development. It is morally right to get involved where there is no justice
and integrity. In some countries where there is a lot of injustice and corruption, other countries are
obligated to help ensure that everyone is treated equally which sometimes leads to military deployment.

Disadvantages
The main disadvantage it the casualties involved in war. Since the countries that provide support do not
have a major interest in the war, their citizens feel like its not important to endanger their lives and the
lives of the soldiers. In the case of Kenya, the terrorists have been killing innocent citizens in retaliation
to the military presence in Somalia. This is a disadvantage since they feel that the attacks would have
been avoided if the military came back home and secured their borders. In Kenya, the Al-Shabaab
attacked a busy shopping mall shooting innocent shoppers in 2014. At least 67 people were killed in the
80 hours siege. The terrorists termed the action as a revenge for the Kenyan militarys presence in
Somalia.

Conclusion and recommendations

There are a lot of valid points of views on both sides of the issue, there are a lot of advantages and
disadvantages whether we get involved in wars or not. In my view, countries should first secure their
borders and ensure the safety of their citizens before getting involved in other wars. There are a lot of
soldiers that die in foreign land fighting wars that they did not need to fight. It is important that we get
