What is EBD? According to IDEA 2004:
o Emotional Disturbance refers to a condition that is attributed by 1 or more of the
following characteristics:
Inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or

health factors
Inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with

peers and teachers


Under normal circumstances, displays continuous, inappropriate types of

behaviors or feelings
General, pervasive mood of unhappiness/depression
Tendency to develop physical symptoms/fears associated with personal or
school problems

o AND:
Has to occur over a long period of time
Have an adverse effect on childs educational performance
Emotional Characteristics
o Anxiety disorders
Separation Anxiety disorders
Generalized Anxiety disorders
Phobia
Panic disorder
Obsessive Compulsive disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder
o Mood disorder
Depression
Students experiencing major depression may experience these
changes:
o Emotion
o Motivation
o Physical well being
o Thoughts
Episodes typically last 7-9 months for individuals

who receive clinical treatment


Suicide/suicidal thoughts
