Project Description (TYPE and print out a detailed process description. Include dates, times and all
people involved; enter more typing returns as needed up to 2 pgs; font size 10 or 12)
For my senior project, I will be volunteering at the YWCA Sonoma County Organization working with women and
children who are fleeing domestic abuse. I chose this project because I care about helping children and I wanted to do
a project where I could make a difference for those in need. Also I always like to teach children or help them with
their homework, so this would be a good, but different experience for me working with children. I also really want to
pursue a career in law enforcement, and I think this will give me important insights into serious crimes of domestic
abuse victims.
For my senior project, I will be completing my hours in the YWCA Organization. In the organization I will be
working in a preschool with children from ages three to five that have witnessed or experienced any kind of abuse in
their household. Before working in the preschool I will attend an orientation where I will see all the buildings of the
YWCA. Once arriving at the preschool, I will be able to sign up in a calendar the days I will like to attend and times.
I will also be receiving a time card that I will have to be using everyday I volunteer to keep record of the time I
volunteer. During the summer, I will go to training from July 25th to August 15th from Monday, Wednesday and
Friday from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. During this training I will be learning about domestic violence, cultural awareness
and sensitivity, victim advocacy and legal issues. By completing this training, I will be able to work at the safe house
where mothers are being kept safely with their children. I will also be working with people of different ages. My
hours will be completed by the end of summer, but I will continue to attend.
I will be working with three different women because I will be switching positions as I get more experience in the
YWCA. My primary mentor is Misty Bastoni. She is the Volunteer Coordinator. She as well has been working at the
YWCA for one year and eight months now. She recruits, trains and maintains all agencys interns and volunteers. She
also oversees the Court Accompaniment program; and the Coach Boys Into Men program, facilitates and helps with
planning the Financial Empowerment program and the Teen Dating Violence outreach program. With her education,
she has obtained a degree in History and currently holds a California Real Estate License and is certified in Domestic
Violence Advocate.
