Given a topic, students will be able to compose a haiku and limerick.
Given a set of rhyming words, students will be able create a free verse poem.
Instruction: The lesson we are learning is on understanding poetry and its literary
techniques. Students will also learn how to compose their own limerick and haiku.
(5-10 mins) I will provide direct instruction to the whole class on the elements that make up a
poem such as line, stanza, meter, verse, and rhythm. The instruction will come from poetry
handouts given to the class that will be displayed on the smart board.
(5-10 mins) Introduce different styles of poetry to the class by calling on students to read
aloud the different poems. (read 2 from poetry4kids.com, will read haiku and limerick I have
designed.
(15-20 mins) Using computers or laptops student will now work independently on typing a
haiku, limerick and a free verse poem. Students will design a poster with their typed poems.
Closure: To bring the lesson to a close we will do a class animoto presentation. We will
take a picture of each students poem then have them read it aloud to add to the presentation.
The student can pick which poem they want to read for the slide show. This is a way that we
can promote peer interaction, have several styles of poetry to reflect on and gathering
understanding on expressing feelings through writing poetry.
