INT. ZOES BEDROOM - DAY

ZOE (17) long chestnut brown hair, is sitting on her bed

painting her nails when she hears her CELL PHONE BEEP. Shes
received a text message from her friend, DEKE. She calls him.

INT. DEKES BEDROOM - DAY

DEKE, seventeen, mixed race, unruly curly hair, is sitting on

his bed playing a VIDEO GAME. The music from the game blares
loudly. He pauses the game, answers his phone, and continues
to play the game.
INTERCUT TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
DEKE
Yo.
ZOE
Hey! I just got your text.
DEKE
Really? I sent that like an hour
ago. What are you doing?
ZOE
Being a productive member of
society.
DEKE
What are you really doing?
ZOE
Absolutely nothing. What are you
doing?
DEKE
Kicking Bagleys ass in Vampire
Zombie Smackdown. Its this new
video game where vampires and
zombies throw down.
ZOE
My money is on the vampires. What
can zombies even do?
VIDEO GAME: Dekes VAMPIRE character rips the head off the
ZOMBIE he is fighting.

VAMPIRE
(laughing)
And now you die!
Goo drips down the neck of the decapitated Zombie. WINNER:
VLADIMIRE the VAMPIRE flashes across the screen.
DEKE
And you would be right.
ZOE
Have you gotten Bagley his birthday
gift yet?
DEKE
I have. Im guessing you havent.
You do know the party is tonight,
right?
ZOE
I am aware of that fact. Will you
come to the mall with me to find
him something?
(singsongy)
Theres a sugar roll in it for you
if you do.
DEKE
I am powerless against deep-fried
sugar. Mall. Twenty minutes.

INT. MALL - DAY

Zoe and Deke meet each other at the mall. The mall is filled
with shoppers walking in and out of stores. They wander past
the first few stores at the entrance, a drug store, a shoe
store and a childrens toy store.
DEKE
So do you know what you want to get
him?
ZOE
I honestly have no idea. Bagley has
very specific... taste. I want to
get him the perfect gift. What did
you get him?
DEKE
(beat)
Socks.

Deke walks into an American Apparel type store, PREP STEP.

Zoe follows him.

INT. PREP STEP - DAY

A few salespeople are seen helping customers, refolding
shirts, and talking to each other.
Deke walks over to a rack of scarves and looks at them. He
takes a patterned one with thin material off the rack.
DEKE
(holding the scarf up for
Zoe to see)
What about this?
ZOE
Bagley gave up scarves.
DEKE
He did? When?
ZOE
When everyone else started wearing
them.
Deke picks up a fleecy blue scarf from a shelf and shows it
to Zoe.
DEKE
Well, what about this one? Its
fleecy and warm. He can wear it for
the winter.
ZOE
He doesnt wear scarves in the
winter anymore either. He said they
became, and I quote...
(airquotes)
Too commercial.
DEKE
But you wear it so youre not cold.
Thats like saying air is too
commercial because everybody
breathes it.
ZOE
Bagley has said that. But the
alternative to not breathing is
suffocating and dying, so he
figured hed just suck it up.

Deke puts the scarf back where he found it and they exit the
store.

INT. MALL - DAY

They keep wandering further into the mall. Zoe stops and
points at the new Chocolate Shop.
ZOE
Hey, that place is new. Lets check
it out.
They enter the chocolate shop.

INT. THE CHOCOLATE SHOPPE - DAY

Zoe and Deke stand in line behind the counter and look at the
rows of chocolates in the display case. There are rows of
white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate desserts.
Zoe looks to her right at a shelf holding boxes of fine
truffles. She picks up a box and shows it to Deke.
ZOE
What about this? Look at all the
different types of chocolates. They
look delicious!
DEKE
Dont you remember? Old Bagles gave
up chocolate when he saw that
documentary about the poor living
conditions of cocoa bean farmers.
ZOE
Of course he did.
Zoe puts the box of chocolates down and slinks out of the
store defeated.

INT. MALL - DAY

The two friends wander aimlessly for a few moments when Deke7
spots a SIGN for special savings on books at the bookstore.
He grabs Zoes arm.
DEKE
The bookstore! Theyre having a
sale. Lets check it out. Theres
gotta be a book on something Bagley
will like.

They take the escalator to the second floor of the mall.

INT. THE BOOK STORE - DAY

Zoe and Deke split up and explore the store on their own,
looking at books they think might interest Bagley.
After several minutes of looking around the store, Zoe spots
Deke in the music section reading a book. She walks over to
him.
ZOE
Did you find something for Bagley?
DEKE
No, but did you know, shortly after
his parents divorced, Kurt Cobain
scribbled,I hate Mom. I hate Dad.
Dad hates Mom. Mom hates Dad. It
simply makes you want to be sad,
onto his bedroom wall?
ZOE
That is... incredibly profound. Do
you think Bagley would like it?
DEKE
Bagleys not a fan of Cobain cause
he thinks he tried too hard to look
like he didnt try.
ZOE
This guy.
Zoe walks toward the exit of the bookstore and Deke puts the
book back on the shelf and follows her.

INT. MALL - DAY

Zoe and Deke continue to walk around the mall in search of a

gift.
ZOE
Ugh, this is so hopeless. We know
everything about what Bagley
doesnt like, but have no clue at
all about what he does like.
DEKE
You know what we need? Food. Food
will help us solve this problem.
Lets hit the food court.
(MORE)

DEKE (CONT'D)
A Spicy Tempura Roll will help us
clear our minds.

INT. FOOD COURT - DAY

Zoe and Deke are sitting at a table for two eating sushi.
DEKE
(chewing his food)
Spicy Tempura Rolls are a gift God
sent from heaven.
ZOE
Agreed.
Zoe looks at a piece of paper sticking out from the bottom of
her tray. She pulls out the piece of paper from under her box
of sushi.
DEKE
Whats that?
ZOE
I dont know.
(reading the flyer)
Its a flyer for this new store
that opened up in the mall called,
Hipsterland.
DEKE
I wonder what kind of stuff they
have. We should check it out.
They finish their meal, dump their garbage in the receptacle
near where they were sitting, and put on their coats.
DEKE (CONTD)
So where is this store?
ZOE
Its upstairs.
Deke and Zoe head to the escalator of the mall leading to the
fourth floor. It is blocked off with an OUT OF SERVICE SIGN.
They find the staircase to the fourth floor and run upstairs.
DEKE
(panting)
I didnt know they had any stores
up here.

ZOE
Neither did I.
Zoe notices how out of breath Deke is from walking up the
stairs.
ZOE (CONTD)
Are you okay?
DEKE
I gotta lay off the fried stuff for
a while.
They walk around the floor until they reach the only store on
the floor. It has a single black door and the windows are
tinted.
DEKE (CONTD)
The door is closed. Is the store
even open?
Zoe hands him the flyer.
ZOE
The flyer says it opened weeks ago.
DEKE
It doesnt look like it. Maybe we
should go.
They are about to turn away when a voice calls out. The voice
is, LENNON, store manager, 28, overweight, exuberant, wearing
eyeglasses with big square frames.
LENNON
What is it that you seek?
DEKE
Uhhhhh...
ZOE
Were looking for a gift for our
friend.
The black door swings open. The room is filled with smoke
from a smoke machine. Zoe and Deke walk into the store.

INT. HIPSTERLAND - DAY

A shadowy figure with a booming voice appears.

LENNON
I am Lennon. Store manager of
Hipsterland. What is it that you
seek?
The lights flicker on and Zoe and Deke can see everything in
the store clearly.
DEKE
That was just about... the coolest
entrance Ive ever seen.
LENNON
Why, thank you.
DEKE
Really spectacular.
LENNON
Im glad you enjoyed it. Were
having a special on smoke machines.
Twenty percent off.
DEKE
Thats awesome! How much are they
usually?
Zoe elbows Deke in the rib.
DEKE (CONTD)
Ow!
ZOE
Hi! So... my friend and I are
looking for a gift for another
friend.
LENNON
Ah, a gift you say. Well, choose
wisely.
DEKE
Why? Will something terrible happen
if we choose the wrong thing?
LENNON
No, its just that our store
doesnt have an exchange policy...
I should warn you though. Its 5:50
p.m. You have ten minutes to find
your perfect gift.
DEKE
Why? What happens in ten minutes?

LENNON
Did you not see the sign in the
window? We close at six.
DEKE/ZOE
Oh.
LENNON
And if youre still here by then
youll be stuck in Hipsterland!
DEKE
Forever?!
LENNON
No! Just until 9 a.m. when Merv
comes in and opens the store.
ZOE
Okay, Deke. We have ten minutes.
She points to the right side of the store.
ZOE (CONTD)
You take that side of the store and
Ill take this side. Call me over
if you find something cool.
Zoe and Deke split up and look at various items in the store.
Zoe picks up and puts down big eyeglass frames, indie records
on vinyl and various hats of different styles. Deke picks up
a slinky, a yo-yo and a few documentaries that are VHS tapes.
Zoe looks at her watch. Its 5:55 p.m. She looks up and sees
a neon green bicycle that has no gears at the end of the
aisle at the back of the store.
ZOE (CONTD)
Deke! I found something! Meet me at
the cash!
Zoe kicks the kickstand back and takes the bike by its
handlebars. The film progresses in slow motion:
TIME LAPSE
--Zoe runs to the cash wheeling the bike with her.
--Deke meets her in an aisle and the two run to an ACTION-Y
RACE AGAINST TIME RIFF like Batman and Robin.

BACK TO SCENE

The two reach the cash register. Lennon rings the purchase
up. Zoe pulls out her CREDIT CARD from her WALLET and pays
for the item.

EXT. MALL - EVENING

13

Zoe stands with the bike. Deke comes through the entrance
door eating a fried sugar roll.
DEKE
How are you going to get that thing
home?
ZOE
Ill just walk it home. I dont
live that far from here.
DEKE
(through a mouthful of
food)
Do you need any help?
ZOE
Ill leave you two alone. See you
at the party?
DEKE
I will see you then.
Zoe starts to wheel the bike away when Deke calls out to her:
DEKE (CONTD)
Text me when you leave so I dont
look like a loser showing up alone!

INT. BAGLEYS HOUSE - EVENING

Most of the GUESTS have arrived for BAGLEYs surprise party.

All of the guests look bored. A few are listening to music
with big headphones. A GROUP are chatting by the snack table,
eating organic vegetables. ANNOYING PARTYGOER, 18, dips a
carrot into a bowl of hummus.
ANNOYING PARTYGOER (O.S.)
You know I grew these carrots in my
backyard.

EXT. BAGLEYS HOUSE - EVENING

Deke is sitting on the front steps of Bagleys house, holding

his gift, waiting for Zoe.
Zoe walks up the sidewalk in front of the house with the
bike. A little red bow is stuck to the centre of the
handlebars.
Deke sees her coming up the sidewalk.
DEKE
Zoe!
He gets off the steps and walks over to her.
DEKE (CONTD)
You put a little bow on it. Nice.
ZOE
Thanks. Can you help me get it
inside?
Deke lifts the front of the bike up the steps while Zoe lifts
the top half. They wheel the bike inside the house.

Zoe and Deke have brought the bike into the house. They stand
at the door surveying the room for a place to put their
gifts.
ZOE
Do you know where the gift table
is?
DEKE
No.
(loudly)
Does anyone know where the gift
table is?
PARTYGOER 1, big glasses, long, dark brown hair, bangs,
stands at the wall with a few people listening to music on
big headphones.
PARTYGOER 1
You brought a gift?
(to other partygoers)
I cant believe they brought a
gift.
She laughs and a few other guests laugh with her.

Deke mocks her laugh while Zoe shoots her a glaring look.
BAGLEY, 17, thin, coiffed hair, wearing a hat, vest, and
skinny jeans enters the room. He walks over to Deke and Zoe.
BAGLEY
Deke! Zoe! You came to my party.
Welcome.
DEKE
Happy Birthday, Bagley!!
ZOE
Happy Birthday!
BAGLEY
Birthdays are so weird, right? Its
like, Yeah, I emerged from a birth
canal inside my mother. Lets have
a big party and cake to celebrate
it! Everybodys done it. Im so
over it!
Deke and Zoe exchange confused glances.
DEKE
I... got this for you?
He hands him his gift.
ZOE
And this is from me.
She lifts up the front of the bike to gesture its his gift.
BAGLEY
You guys are too precious! Youre
adorable! You got me gifts.
He pulls out a folded invitation for his party from his
pocket, unfolds it, and hands it to Deke. Deke holds the
invitation so Zoe can see what it says.
BAGLEY (CONTD)
Didnt you guys see the invitation
disclaimer? I said no gifts.
DEKE/ZOE
(reading the invitation)
Please no gifts. If you must, a
donation to a charity that supports
cocoa bean farmers is strongly
encouraged and also the only thing
I could ever want.

13.

Deke and Zoe study the invitation. After few moments Deke and
Zoe exchange a look of mutual understanding.
DEKE
Well, Im out.
Zoe stands the bike up on its kickstand.
ZOE
(to Bagley)
Yeah, I cant be friends with you
anymore.
Deke walks to the door and opens it for Zoe.
DEKE
See you later, Bagley.
(to the partygoers)
Bye weirdo hipsters!
The hipsters dont acknowledge Deke and Zoe. Bagley looks
shocked and hurt his friends left the party.
FADE TO BLACK.
