The Knox County Stormwater management group was facing an erosion problem at a stormwater pipe outfall. Rock armor was installed but the erosion shifted downstream. TYPAR Grassprotecta mesh and a double net straw blanket were selected to stabilize the soil in the long transition zone. The materials were installed according to the manufacturer's specifications and the area was seeded. The Grassprotecta mesh eliminated the erosion issue and allowed for vegetation establishment while providing access for maintenance vehicles without further damaging the area.

an existing outfall adjacent to a subdivision that was receiving stormwater that was eroding the soil away. The group installed rock armor at the outfall, but the stabilization tactic transferred the erosion problem that was then shifted to the end of the rip-rap stone installation. A solution was needed to mitigate the erosive forces in the long transition zone from pipe outfall to drainage swale.
Solution
TYPAR Grassprotecta mesh was selected for scour
protection and installed beyond the rock armor. Due to the soil found in this area a double net straw blanket was selected to be installed underneath the Grassprotecta to help contain fine soil particles during vegetation establishment. The contractor leveled the eroded zone with a skid steer and a rack to prepare the surface for installation. The area was then seeded and the straw blanket was installed to the manufacturers specification. Grassprotecta was installed over the double-net straw blanket and anchored in-place using the TYPAR recommended Scour Protection Anchors. The site was complete and vegetation was allowed to establish in the erosion-prone transition zone due to the reinforcement of Grassprotecta.
Quick Facts
Project: Knox County Stormwater Management Park Address:
to eliminate erosion problems at the pipe outfall. The vegetated solution provides a green armament to match the aesthetic of the subdivision, blending the solution into the existing infrastructure. Grassprotecta provided a soil erosion solution and allowed the group personnel to be able to access the existing area by vehicle without damaging the ditch or transition zone, providing additional support during regular lawn maintenance and access.
