ABSTRACT

The contribution in the technological development of agriculture in the Philippines would

be a big help to improve the quantity and quality for yield production of crops and the farmers
daily work effectively and efficiently. One of the brightest prospects of agriculture crops for
economy in Philippines is banana. Banana has the second cash-crop export after coconut, but
it needs to take care for the growth development in order to achieve the best quality fruit to
harvest. The proponents of the study were able to think is how to develop a system/device that
protects and supports for the growth development of the tissue-cultured banana plantlets.
Although Bananas grow best in bright sunlight, due to the unpredictable change in
climate temperature, excessive high temperature will occur at any time and the occurrence of
heat stress in crops cannot be monitored and controlled accurately thus it would affect the
optimal growth for crops and potential maximum yield production of a banana fruit.
The problem can be alleviated by a system/device developed to provide reliable,
accurate and automated Temperature Monitoring of the Tissue-cultured Cavendish Banana
plantlets and to make it respond on high temperature that is critical for Banana plantlets.
This device is able to measure heat causing stress to the premature plantlets through
temperature sensors and display the measured temperature values on the LCD display, also
this device can automatically normalize the temperature through an effective cooling system
responding to the critical temperature values of a Cavendish Banana. The users can remote
control and monitoring even without their presence within their respective screen house farm
through android phone via SMS.

The testing of the device for data gathering was successfully done on the screen house
in Bureau of Plant Industry-Davao National Crop Research and Development Center. As a
result, this device is reliable, accurate and convenient to the users and their screen house
farms as well.
