The tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, created the
baptism ceremony of the Sikhs. This ceremony
gives Sikhs their own identity with the use of five
symbols. These five symbols are symbolic articles
of their faith, and are commonly called The Five
K's .

Kangha: Wooden comb that is used to


keep a Sikh's hair clean. It is symbolic for
cleanliness, and is used daily by both males
and females.

Kara: Steel bracelet that is a symbol of restraint. This bracelet is worn as a reminder to
Sikhs to not do anything that would not be
approved of by their religion, or frowned upon
by the gurus

Kachera: Pair of shorts/ underwear that is a


symbol of chastity.

Kesh: Uncut hair because hair is a symbol


of holiness for Sikhs. This is why Sikhs use
turbans.

Kirpan: A sword that symbolizes spirituality.

After the tragic terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, Sikhs have been a
target of discrimination and hate.
