INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE (Lesson Objective*)

After reading The Outsiders, students will construct a character analysis of a given member of
either the Greasers or the Socs based on their answers to six questions on a worksheet following
an excerpt from the novel with no errors in fact.

MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner (s)*)

Students will watch a video clip of the movie, The Outsiders.

MATERIALS

STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

Direct Instruction: The teacher will provide the students with a description of a character analysis
and what the assignment consists of.

Group Discussion: The teacher will engage students during group discussions after reading
passages out loud from the novel and allowing students to practice analyzing characters verbally,
before writing it down.
Cooperative Learning: The students will work cooperatively in groups of three to create a
character analysis of a given member from either the Greasers or the Socs based on their answers
on the worksheet following the excerpt from the novel and present it to the class.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)

The student who is an English Language Learner will be provided with a fill in the blank
character analysis worksheet on a given member of the Greasers or the Socs.
DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

Tier I: Students will work in groups of three to complete the six questions following the excerpt
in their group discussion. Students will then complete a character analysis of either a Greaser or
a Soc with no more than three errors. Students will be provided with fill in the blank worksheets
of both the questions following the excerpt and the character analysis.
Tier II: Students will work in groups of three to complete the six questions following the excerpt
in their group discussion. Students will then complete a character analysis of either a Greaser or
a Soc with no errors.
Tier III: Students will work in groups of three to complete the six questions following the excerpt
in their group discussion. Students will then complete a character analysis of either a Greaser or
a Soc with no errors individually.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

Students will review with the teacher what a thorough character analysis consists of (Why
is this character important? What do they do specifically in the book? Give examples)
Students will listen to the teacher read the excerpt provided out loud (How does this
scene make you feel? What are the characters doing specifically to make you feel this
way?)
Students will get into groups of three and discuss six questions on worksheet (How do
you feel towards the narrator, Ponyboy? Why do you think there was/is so much
controversy regarding this book? This book was written over 30 years ago. Why do you
think it is still so popular?)
Students will answer the questions, according to their tiers, and further discuss
Students will present their analyses to the class

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)

Formal: Students will complete the character analysis for homework and hand in their character
analyses to the teacher to be graded.
Informal: Students will be assessed based off of their answers in the class discussion, with each
member speaking about their own character analysis.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Following the lesson on character analysis in The Outsiders, students will complete their
analyses and six questions [if not completed] for homework with no errors.

FOLLOW-UP: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC


ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention: The teacher and student will read the excerpt from The Outsiders
together and go over what a character analysis consists of and what is expected from them.
Academic Enrichment: The students will present collective analyses of the three students in their
group in which they must use various and specific examples from the book.
