Dear Representative/ Senator <name of legislative official>
I am writing to you today in support of increasing medication adherence through an amendment
to the prescription monitoring program in Illinois Law.
The lack of proper medication adherence has many consequences on our healthcare system. It
leads to upwards of $300 billion spent on avoidable healthcare costs, less control and healthy
outcomes when dealing with chronic diseases, and affects vulnerable populations even more.
In the United States, 20-30% of people never fill their prescription after receiving one from
their physician. In addition, 50% of them will not be able to fully follow their physicians
instructions on how to take the medicine. The burden of medication adherence is even greater
when dealing with prescriptions for chronic diseases, as people taking drugs for chronic
conditions tend to take them less and less over time.
Please amend to include the language the following language to (720 ILCS 570/316), so that the
prescription Medication Program of Illinois will also record: The patient self-reported measure of
medication adherence. When acquiring this measure the patient must be informed of the
confidentiality of his answer, and that his answer will be exempt from penalty from his
healthcare provider and/or insurer.
This amendment will allow the Prescription Medication Program to be used not only to prevent
prescription abuse and addiction, but to also use the information provided by it, which is
accessible only to physicians and pharmacists, to enhance the quality of care consumed by the
patient.
The time spent at a hospital is not the end of how people receive healthcare. Medication
adherence is important to how patients recover from and deal with their conditions. I ask that
Representative/Senator <name of legislative official> would support this amendment to the
Prescription Monitoring Program.
Sincerely,
