Whats Inside the Brown Bag?

TARGET AGE GROUP/ OBJECTIVE:
-Kindergarten through First grade, small group of children with Autism.
-Reinforce the skills of identifying objects with the use of descriptive words;
encourage children to ask questions.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
-Large Fabric Bag
-Pictures of objects that children with little verbal communication can identify.
(See the following attachment)
-For each picture of the object, have the actual object that can be placed in the
bag
ACTIVITY/PROCESS:
1.) Start by describing each picture to the small group of children (Use
description words such as; Big Red Ball).
2.) Place an object into the fabric bag without the children seeing.

3.) Pass the bag around, allowing each child to feel the object through fabric.
4.) After everyone has had a turn, encourage children to use words to describe
the object, if children cant identify the object verbally have them point to the
picture of what they think is in the bag.

5.) Repeat many times the name of the object, encouraging the children to repeat
what you say.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR NONVERBAL CHILDREN:
Have picture of all the items in the bag and require the children to reach into the
bag and find the object you are showing them the picture of. The teacher should be
repeating the name of the item repeatedly, while describing the item.

EVALUATION:
Students will be able to demonstrate that have achieved the lesson objective by
no longer needing to make flashcards to help with pronunciation. The student
should be able to sound out any difficult words on their own with very little or no
help from the teacher.
