Concepts of Print Awareness
The concept of print awareness is for students to learn the beginning skills in
reading and writing independently. It is to understand words, letters,
sentences and spaces of print.
Grade: Kindergarten
Steps:
1) Select a book such as, Dr. Seuss "Do You Like Green Eggs and
Ham?".
2) Sit down with a student and assess them with the following
questions. Repeat question if the student does not understand.
3) Record student responses.
Assessment
1. Show me the front of the book.
2. Show me the title of the book.
3. Start reading and ask the student to help you. Show me where to start
reading. Where do I begin reading.
4. Which way do I go?
5. Where do I go after that?
6. Point while I read it to you.
7. Show me the first part of the page. Show me the last part of the page.
8. Ask about punctuation. Example a comma. Ask the student what is this
for?
9. Ask about capital and lowercase letters. Find a lower, small letter like
this.
10.
Ask about punctuation. Example quotation marks. What is this
for?
11.
Find a uppercase letter,big letter like this.
12.
Point to end of the book at the period. What is this for? What
does it mean?
