Pre-Operative
Assess knowledge and understanding
of the procedure with the patient,
providing information as needed.
Rationale: Anxiety is reduced and
recovery is enhanced and hastened
when the client is fully prepared for
surgery.

Pre-Operative
Inform patient the basic needs to do
before surgery such as withholding
food and fluids and for bowel
preparation.
Assist patient to put on the hospital
gown and let the patient lie on the
exam table on top of a soft, waterfilled cushion

Post-operative
Monitor vital signs for early
indications of infection;
infections should be treated
with the appropriate
antibioticagent before efforts
are made to dissolve the stone.
Monitor amount, color and
clarity of urine output.
Maintain placement and

Encourage patients to
increase fluid intake and
to ambulate to flush out
stone fragments.
Crush any blood clots
passed in urine, and
inspect sides ofurinal
and bedpan for clinging
stones.

Instruct patient to
report any increase in
pain.
Explain that
medications must be
taken as prescribed and
may find comfort by
applying warm packs
