Mathematics Reflection
Being prepared to teach mathematics means to have content knowledge about problem
solving skills, reasoning and proof. As well as, to accurately calculate equations, understand
concepts, conceptual understanding and mathematical concepts of operation and relations. Even
more importantly, teachers need to know the scope and range of the mathematics they are
teaching. They need to know the standards that are appropriate for their particular course, as well
as, what those standards mean. I want to help my students in ways which they will understand
the mathematics concepts which including, thinking about sequencing of mathematic concepts as
well as knowing pieces of math. I want to motivate my students by ideas that will stimulate
curiosity, create enjoyment of mathematics and develop depth of understanding in the topic.
My math classes, Math 110A and Math 110B for elementary school teacher, have taught
me to teach mathematics so that it makes sense to my students. In addition, it has taught me to
make choices about what mathematical representation to use with students and which of those
representations are likely to understood and misunderstood by students. My math class has
helped me to understand that I need to know what resources I have available, as well as, how
useful those resources are for teaching. Mathematics is not a collection of tricks to be memorized
but a rational body of knowledge, to understand from a day to day lesson.
The artifact that I choose was from Math for Elementary Teachers class. In this
class I made a math portfolio of my notes, homework, quizzes and tests. This class has helped
me to be organized and neat. In addition, I learned about problem solving skills, the foundation
of Geometry, as wells as, measurement and ratio to solve problems. My exams, quizzes and
notes show my understanding of Math Common Core Standards for grade levels 3, 4, 5, and 6. It

demonstrates my understanding of equations and mathematical concepts by accurately selecting


the best equation to solve real-world problems. Additionally, this class has helped me to want to
make sure students are learning and absorbing the critical information they need to succeed.
