Science Reflection

As a science teacher I need to know how to use, and interpret scientific explanations, as
well as, evaluate scientific evidence and explanations. In addition, the Science frameworks
states, I need to understand the development of scientific knowledge introduce facts, concepts,
principles and theories under the title of physical, life and earth sciences. Being an effective
science teacher means raising questions, exploring, and carefully observing students. In addition,
the framework states that students should be recording, also, analyzing, and theorizing all skills
fundamental to the work of science in the classroom.
In my sciences classes SMT 416 and Earth Science for Teachers 210A, I learn a less is
more approach to science content which allows us to go deeply in building teachers
understanding of fundamental science concepts. This concept provides a way for teachers to
organize and structure individual investigations, including the key components of engaging
childrens attention and stimulating their ideas for hands on explorations, investigation and
reflecting on new experiences and information.
The artifact I will be using is from my SMT 416 Earth Science for Elementary School
Teachers class. In this class I learn about the rock cycle, and volcanic hazards, as well as, the
ocean floor and earthquakes. The artifact is a test I took that shows my understanding of
extrusive igneous rocks and the different types of volcanoes. Additionally, it shows my
knowledge of earth science skills and concepts of Geology through laboratory exercise. This also
connects to Grades 4, 5, and 6 common core standards that teachers need to be teaching in their
classroom. Being an effective teacher means to provide students with multiple opportunities to
engaged, explore and reflect when it comes to science.
