College Reading Reflection

Through RRJs I was able to create focus on each individual chapter and absorb every aspect
that Skyhorse inscribed into them. Each chapter hasw specific moods/themes that helped to
express a piece of the overall journey within Echo Park. For example, because of RRJs, I was
able to efficiently maintain the connection between CH.3 and Ch.8. The reference between the
Coat Lady and the fabled girl that would come to her doorstep, and the unraveling of everything
with Aurora and her dog. As well as the biblical connections between the Virgin Mary and the
omniscient presence of The Lord. RRJs also helped to identify Auroras maturity and how it
affected her ventures back into Echo Park. When it comes to the effects the books characters
had on me, I would say that Angie and Freddy had the most influence on re-appreciating a
pursuit in education. Angie helped to embody the ideal state of survival through adapting and
change. She sought to better herself by going to college and to leave the ghettos or as her
friends saw it, to be white. Skyhorse enforced the importance and viability of this when he left
her as the only real survivor in her chapter. Freddy became a figure of what not to be, he
became a symbol of tradition lost in a sea of change. He had nothing to anchor him anymore
and was just a drifter. Stuck in the past, he was alienated from his own home.
Overall I would say that college has taught me to be more pedantic and specific in my
writing. Not too short, not too long. Of course, this was prevalent in High School, but in College
this became a major guideline. Adjectives, adjectives, adjectives, im practically breathing
adjectives at this point. There hasnt really been any difficult reading for me so far in college,
really it only starts to get tedious when its something olde english and the words feel
scrambled. When it comes to cases like this, I just need to take a slower pace and take my time.
As is the case with anything, it becomes much more easier and comfortable when it becomes
routine. College was different at the time of my first semester, time feels much less restricted
and keeping track on my reading becomes loose. Everything feels much more listless and fastpaced and yet everyone else seems to have a grip on their work. Honestly, I just need to make it
a habit and jump in on assignments more.
