Condoms vs. IUD vs. The Pill Condoms are usually made of plastic or latex. Condoms prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Every year 2 out of every 100 women get pregnant while using condoms regularly and effectively. Also, only 6 in 100 people are allergic to latex and have problems using condoms. Birth control pills are taken daily by mouth. Birth control pills are made of hormones. The pill works by keeping eggs from leaving the ovaries, without eggs there is nothing for sperm to attach to. Less than 1 in 100 women will get pregnant while taking birth control regularly and correctly. The pill may be slightly less effective for women who are overweight. The pill however does no protect against sexually transmitted diseases. IUD birth control is a T shaped device that is inserted into the uterus. It can cost 5001000 dollars and lasts up to 12 years. The IUD either thickens mucus in the cervix or prevents the egg from being released. This is supposedly the most effective type of birth control, less than 1 in 100 women get pregnant with the IUD.
