Introducing Texture

Objective: Students will identify the texture of different songs by listening to the
singers.
Age Appropriate Grade: 3rd-5th
National Core Standard: Respond Interpret intent and meaning in musical work.
Step by Step Process:
1. Teacher will choose different songs that correlate with the different textures
(monophonic, harmonic, and polyphonic).
2. The students will listen to the different songs and identify which texture the
song represents.
3. The teacher can have the students be creative and draw a picture or symbol
that represents the different textures from the songs.
Resources: computer, speakers, different songs

Group Texture Performance


Objective: Students will perform different textures by using creativity.
Age Appropriate Grade: 4th-5th
National Core Standard for Music: Perform Convey meaning through the
presentation of musical work.
Step by Step Process:
1. The teacher will divide the class into groups.
2. Each group will receive a CD or playlist that has 3-5 songs; different examples
of texture.
3. The students will listen to the songs and pick which songs are examples of
the different textures.
4. The students will then pick 3 songs and physical perform (act out) the
textures.
5. The students will have the songs playing while they are acting it out.
