satire

sat()r/
noun
1. the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's
stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical
issues.

Satire plays a heavy part in Pygmalion, and is the source of the comedic elements in
the story. Satire is incorporated in almost all of the character interaction and plays off of
the stereotype of proper and rude British aristocrats. The characters in the story have a
blatant disregard for each others feelings at times and also use insults to emphasize
their stance on a subject or to convey certain feelings. In the quote, Shall we ask this
baggage to sit down or shall we just throw her out of the window?, Higgins is using
satire in reference to Lizas shabby appearance.
