    Female fertility peaks in the late teens to late 20s and then gradually declines after age 30. The chance of pregnancy decreases from 20-25% under age 30 to only a 5-10% chance by age 40. There is also an increased risk of miscarriage and genetic abnormalities like Down's syndrome with rising maternal age. Specifically, the miscarriage rate increases from 10-15% at age 30 to over 50% by age 45. The main reason for declining fertility and increased health risks with age is that eggs age and develop abnormalities over time in women. IVF success rates also decline with rising maternal age, showing a drop starting around age 35.
