Planning for Interview One

Interviewees Name: Jared Walker, Steve Morano
Date and Time of interview: 9th March

How will you record the interview?

We will record the interview in the studio using three studio cameras on tripods that are connected
to a vision mixer. I will also be using studio set studio lights and a portable microphone.

In what medium (audio, visual, written etc) will the final interview be presented?
The medium that the final interview will be presented in will be a visual interview for a television
show.

What information do you need to get from this interview?

The information that we need to get from this interview is information about the culture and lifestyle
behind the genre of folk music.

Describe how you are planning on contacting and liaising with your talent (interviewee)
I am contacting and liaising my interviewee using online messaging via Facebook. I will then
screenshot the text messages and use that as proof of the agreement.

Production Booklet

How will you make sure unnecessary sounds etc are not recorded?
The studio room that it is being recorded in has been soundproofed so no unnecessary sound are
able to come in while we are recording. A boom is being used as this helps cancel out any extra
noise. Only a small crew will be inside the studio while filming so there will be minimal noise from
people.

If visual recording, explain how you will deal with any issues caused by ambient light.
Ambient light is a difficult light to work with as it is not controllable and can affect the appearance
and the look of the television setting if it is not set outside.

What equipment will you need to carry out this interview?

The equipment that we will need for this interview are three studio cameras, microphones, a vision
mixer, studio lighting, a green screen, and a set for the interview and television programme to take
place in.

Location recce for Interview One

Location:
Henley College Studio
Possible Problems:
The Studio could be occupied to other students at the same time, but it
shouldnt be though due to scheduling. Outside noise
Issues with Health and Safety: Someone could trip over the wires, possible strains from moving
props around.

Lighting:

Controlled lighting focused on the interviewer and interviewee.

Production Booklet

Location recce for Interview Two

Location:
Reading Festival Grounds
Possible Problems:
Bad weather could make the field slippery and unsafe and difficult to
setup. The weather might also change and affect the lighting throughout the interview.
Issues with Health and Safety: Field could be unsteady and slippery and could cause a possible
accident with the crew and equipment.
Lighting:
Natural light, could vary throughout filming.

Production Booklet

Structuring your interview: Scripts and Question Formulation

Question: What instruments do you play?

Likely Response:
I play the piano and the acoustic guitar and the electric
guitar.

Next Question: Are these instruments typical to folk music?

Likely Response:
Yeah, the instruments that you mainly see in folk music are
the older more tradition style of instruments such as
acoustic guitars, ukuleles and the fiddle.

Next Question: How long have you been playing music for?

Likely Response:
I have been playing music since I was about 9 years old,
so I was quite young, but I really got into it and now music
is my life and that is what I love doing.

Production Booklet

Next Question: How did you get introduced into folk music?

Likely Response:
I got introduced into folk music through my parents and the
rest of my family as they were already into and listening to
that kind of music.

Next Question: So folk music has been a major part of your life then What does
folk music mean to you?

Likely Response:
Folk music means everything to me, it is what I enjoy doing
and it has become part of me and is part of my lifestyle
now.

Next Question: What is your experience of folk festivals?

Likely Response:
Folk festivals are very fun and enjoyable to go to. It is a lot
more community based compared to all the other kinds of
festivals. At folk festivals people get together and chat and
drink. It is a lot more easy-going and has a laid back
attitude compared to your average festival where it is all
about the music and people going to mosh pits.

Production Booklet

Question: What kind of audience does folk music and folk festivals appeal to?

Likely Response:
The kind of audience that you see mainly going to folk
festivals and being into folk music are generally the older
generation, and people from the countryside as opposed to
the city. There are not too many young people there.

Next Question: Why dont you think that many young people listen to Folk music?

Likely Response:
I think that not many young people listen to folk music due
to the stereotyping of folk music. There is also a slight
prejudice against it which is probably putting young people
off listening to it as well.

Next Question: How would you get more people to listen to folk music?

Likely Response:
Some indie and rock bands are quite similar to the folk
genre and are popular with young people. So if more folk
artist supported these indie bands and them folk music
would become more known to young people.

Interview Style for Interview One

Production Booklet

What will your interview style be? (formal, informal and chatty, intense, questioning, argumentative,
friendly, jokey)
My interview style will be more informal, chatty and friendly.

Why have you chosen that style?

This will keep the audience interested and help the interviewee open up more.

Add research of other interview/chat shows where the presenter has a similar style. You can insert
another page here for your research.
Graham Norton interviews George Ezra on The Graham Norton Show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUucgkSNZKo
Graham uses a very chatty, friendly and jokey way of interviewing which relaxes the guest and
makes it a lot easier for them to open up. This is the kind of style that we are going to try and
emulate.
