FA-01: First Aid 101

Course Description:
First Aid procedures that any worker or parent would need to know when a First
Aid situation arises in the home or workplace. Topics to be covered are cleaning
and bandaging a small wound, treating a strain/sprain, burn, CPR, safety
programs, and injury prevention. Upon completion of the course the participant
will have demonstrated all the required First Aid procedures.

None required
Recognition of Prior Learning:
None this course/training is only valid for 3 years and then has to be retaken

Course Format:
This course incorporates classroom delivery consisting of lectures,
demonstrations, co-operative and team learning activities, presentations,
discussions, dialogues and written submissions. There will be ample
opportunities for self and peer evaluations as well as instructor feedback.

Student Readiness
Technology & Equipment Readiness:
Students must have access to a computer with minimum hardware and software
requirements consistent with those found on computers in college computer labs,
plug-ins, Internet.

Student Commitments and Contact Times:


This 20 hour course is delivered over a 5 week period of 2 hours per class each
Tuesday night. Attendance is required for scheduled classed as well as meeting
with classmates, as agreed upon, for team or small group activities.

Student Learning
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course of study, you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate how to apply pressure to a bleeding wound, stop the bleeding,
clean/sterilize, bandage and prevent future infection of a wound.
2. Demonstrate how to treat a strain/sprain of a muscle, including icing and
heating of a muscle and strain/sprain prevention.
3. Demonstrate the procedure for tending to a burn wound, running under cool
water and when to call 911
4. Demonstrate the procedure for applying CPR to a person in need, including
how to administer chest compressions and rescue breathing.
5. Develop or implement a safety program for a home or workplace
6. Implement an injury prevention program

Instructional Schedule:
This course is delivered over 5 weeks and each week there is a new topic. Each
module guides you through a series of activities, readings and demonstration required
for each class.
