1. Known: The long iron rods property, the initial temperature of the rod, the
diameter of the rod, the ambient temperature and the convection coefficient.
Find: The time required for the iron rod surface temperature to cool to 200oC.
Schematic:

Assumption:
(1) Water temperature remains constant.
(2) Losses by conduction through the water is negligible
(3) Constant property
Analysis:
First we check the Bio number:

2. Known: The base plate of an irons property, the thickness and the surface area of
the base plate of an iron, the uniform heat flux which is applied to the inner
surface, the ambient temperature and the convection coefficient.
Find: The time required for the plate to reach a temperature of 135C.
Schematic:

Assumption:
(1) The initial temperature of the base plate of an iron equals to ambient
temperature.
(2) Uniformly heat flux
(3) Constant property
Analysis:
First we check the Bio number:

We can use L.C.M to solve the problem. Since there is a uniform heat flux, we
have the function:

3. Known: The iron slabs property and the concrete floors property, the initial
temperature of both..
Find:
(a) The surface temperature between the iron slab and concrete floor.
(b) The temperature of the concrete floor at the depth of 25 mm, if the surface
temperature remains constant after 15 minutes.
Schematic:

Assumption:
(1) One-dimensional conduction in the x-direction
(2) Negligible contact resistance
(3) Constant property
Analysis:
(a) We can see the iron slab and the concrete floor as semi-finite
media. Since they are the two semi-infinite media with
different initial temperature. We can use the equation (5.66)
to find the surface temperature.
