SOCRATIC SEMINAR

DISCUSSION DIRECTIONS
1. Get into pairs with your partners.
2. Form two circles around the classroom (an inner circle and an outer circle).
3. Partners should choose who will be the speaker and the notetaker.
4. A news article titled, "Overview, Part 4: Soft Money - A Look at the Loopholes" will
be handed out to every student where half of the room will be given an opportunity
to read it during this time.
5. Before the activity begins, I will read the article and elaborate on any words or
sentences that may be too advanced. You and your partner will be annotating the
reading as you listen.
6. During the activity, engage in the text with your partners by having the inner
circle of students be the speakers, while the outer circle of students are the
notetakers and listeners. The notetakers will again use the notes section in their
discussion directions to write.
7. The speakers will analyze the text to the rest of the class, while the notetakers
write down intriguing points and the main ideas. After the speakers are done
speaking, they will then call on another speaker in the inner circle to give their
analysis.
8. After the activity, the notetakers should share their notes to the speakers.
