Evaluation Part: Four

How does your media product represent

particular social groups?

There are many different types of people we have represented

stereotypically throughout our film, these stereotypes we constructed
consisted of policemen, gangs/criminals and abuse victims. In my opening
sequence, the main character is an abuse victim of her mother, whom
beat her is represented to feel very sorry for herself, not having any close
relations and being depressed. This is a stereotypical representation of an
abuse victim as not all victims are effected later on in life by their abuse,
they may have many friends and be content with their lives. The main
character is also an ex-police women, she is shown to be brave and
independent. She is strong willed and we represented her like this due to
the fact that police have to have these characteristics stereotypically to
face their demanding job. Females will desire to have this brave and
confident overview, which is shown when she picks up a knife insinuating
that she is pre-pared to use it, this will create a thrill and burst of pride in
the female audience because of her admirable characteristics, straight
after the audience are made to feel connected and sympathy for her due
to a voice over in to her dark past. The representation of other social
groups do not come in to play until much later, this is due to them being
introduced during the twist of the story, therefore our opening sequence
does not include them. The social groups represented in the opening
sequence is very limited due to there is only one character that we get to
meet in the opening sequence. The main character. The opening sequence
is an aim to create a
personal connection
between the audience
and the main character
which is why we have
included her back story,
to gain sympathy. If the
audience sympathise for
her this means that they
will gain an attachment
to her. Also it will create
a opposition, between
hero and villain. With
this opposition it creates
a fast-past storyline for
the audience to follow.
