THE CHERNOBYL ACCIDENT

Presented by Kornkanok, Nedsara, Kamonrat and

Sukanya

WHAT IS CHERNOBYL?
Chernobyl, or Chornobyl, is the name of a city situated

in northern Ukraine near the border with Belarus.

Prior to its evacuation Chernobyl was inhabited by

16,000 people but is now populated only by Zone

administrative personnel, some of those involved in
shutting down the power plants and a few of the
residents who refused to leave their homes or who
have returned after being forced to leave.

ABOUT CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER

PLANT
Located about 81 miles (130 km) north of the city

ofKiev,Ukraine, and about 12 miles (20 km) south of

the border with Belarus

The four reactors at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

were designed and built during the 1970s and 1980s.

Reactor No.4 was the site of theChernobyl disasterand

the power plant is now within a large restricted area

known as the Exclusion Zone or The Zone.

The nuclear power plant site is to be cleaned by 2065

The
Exclusion
THEcurrent
ZONES
Zone is roughly 1,600
square miles of land
contaminated with a
high degree of
radiation.
The Ukrainian
government will open
safer areas for tourism
this year, most likely
lower-radiation
locations outside the 6mile zone that
surrounds reactor

WHAT IS THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER

It is an explosion and fire that released large quantities

of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere,

which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe.

. Ukraine was part of Russia on the 26th April 1986

when the disaster occurred.

It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident

in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7

event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the
other being the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011)

WHAT CAUSED THE DISASTER?

There were two official explanations of the accident:
The first, was published in August 1986 and put the blame on
the power plant operators.
The second reportpublished in 1992 blamed the design of the
reactor itself.
The accident occurred during anexperiment to test a way of
coolingthe core of the reactor in an emergency situation. The
testincluded the scheduled shutdown of reactor 4 which
caused the explosion.

THE AFTERMATH
The radiation caused many people to get ill with

diseases such as thyroid cancer and leukemia.

The immediate impact of the Chernobyl accident

caused serious social and economic disruption for

large population in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia
because they were forced out of their homes in
Chernobyl and Pripyat (near Chernobyl).

AFTER
THE
EXPLOSION
Most of the
released
material
was deposited close by as dust
and debris, but the lighter
material was carried by wind
over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia
and to some extent over
Scandinavia and Europe.
