Teaching Philosophy

Teachingprovestohavemanyrewardsandchallenges.Intheartofteaching,these
rewardsandchallengesshowjusthowrewardingandvaluableteachingcanreallybe.While
teaching,therearemanyideasandcontributionsIcanmakeforthebettermentofmystudents.
Onewouldbetoshowvalueinmystudents.Studentsneedtohaveacommunityandpositive
environmentforlearningtoensue.Anotherwouldbetocreatesuchacommunityinthe
classroomthatnostudentfeelsinadequatetothegrowthheorshecanmakeacademically.
MytimeatMiamiUniversityhaswellpreparedmetoteachallsubjectsinkindergarten
tothirdgrade.Specifically,Ihaveextensivelylearnedteachingwordstudy,the5Eapproachto
science(engage,explore,explainelaborate,andevaluate),andeffectiveliteracyinstruction.The
coursesIhavebeenpreparedtoteachalsoleadmeintoobtainingstudentobjectives.These
objectivesarecreatedbasedontheaudience,thebehavior,thecondition,andthedegreeof
outcomefromeachlesson.Withthestudentobjectivesinplace,Icanaccuratelymakesuremy
studentshavemettheobjectivesandlearnedthecontenttaught.Whileteachingthecontent,
studentsshouldbegainingtheknowledgeneededtonotonlylearnthematerial,butalsolearnthe
materialinawaythatdevelopsselflearningskillsandmakingtheconnectionstoprevious
knowledge.Thestudentswillunderstandthefoundationalconceptsofthecontent;become
criticalthinkersthatcancarryoverintorealworldconnections,andtheabilitytoteachothers
whattheyhavebeentaught.
Myteachingpracticesincludehandsonlearning,groupworkinteractions,andpeer
teacherinvestigation.Ialsobelieveinstudentledactivities,whereasthestudentsshouldbe
guidingtheactivitiesbasedontheirinterests.Theteachingpracticesarealsodirectlylinkedto
thelevelsofinterestsintheactivitiesaswellasstudentabilities.Withthevaryingstudent
abilitiesthatcanbeseeninoneclassroom,IneedtomakesureIammeetingtheneedsofeach
studentindividuallywhilealsotakingintoconsiderationthedevelopmentallyappropriate
activitiestodoso.
Iamalsoahugeadvocateforinstructionaltechnology.Withtechnologybecomingmore
andmoreprominentinstudentslivestoday,technologyshouldalsobeincorporatedintothe
classroom.ThisshouldbedevelopedthroughIpadapplications,computerprograms,and
Internetresearch.Eachoftheseideascanbeusedandcanenhancelessonsgreatly.
Agreatteacheralsoknowshowtomeasurehisorhereffectiveness.Ateacheris
constantlylookingathisorherobjectivestoseeifthestudentismeetingthem.Icantellmy
studentsarelearningwhentheyareengagedandmeetingthemeasureableoutcomeandthe
degreeoftheobjective.Basedondifferentassessmentsused(written,checklists,observations,
ratingscales,etc.),Icanusestudentsprogressandresultstodrivemyfutureinstruction.
Overall,myteachingphilosophyisdrivenbytheneedsofmystudents.Aneffective
teacherknowstheirstudentsandknowstheirneedsoftypesofinstruction.Ateacherisa
facilitatorforlearning,butthefacilitatingshouldbebasedonwhatheorsheisobservingfrom
thestudents.Whenyouteachwhatyoulove,andsharewhatyouknow,youopentheminds,the
hearts,andtheeyes,andthesoulsofeachstudenttoknewandexcitingworldsofknowledge.
