Lesson Plan 1/20/2015

Before the Lesson

Topic/Subject/Grade: Data collection review,
Spreadsheets/Probability &Statistics/ Grade 12
Primary SOL: South Carolina Standard DA-3.1: Using Technology.
Other Related Materials: ISTE 6.a: Understand and Use Technology.
Objective: The student will be able to collect data, and translate that
data into a graphical representation.
Condition of the Task: Students will use a spreadsheet to create
graphs using a researched data set.
Observable Task: Students will create graphs, and set up data tables.
Measurable Criterion: Students will have generated a data table and
representative graph.
Materials/Equipment: Laptop, active Internet connection, M&Ms.
Classroom Diversity:
Cultural Diversity: Examples may be used from around the
world from a variety of fields.
Special Needs: Students may use headphones for hearing.
Machines can share screens if the main large screen is too
difficult to see.
Socioeconomic Groups: Laptops are provided for all
students, as is necessary software.
During the Lesson:
Set: Students will create a data table from a bag of M&Ms.
Lesson: Students will begin the class by reviewing basic data
collection methods. Students will be asked to open laptops and go to
Google Sheets. Students will be taught the basic principles of preparing
a spreadsheet. Simple functions of summation and average will be
provided. Students will be taught how to create a graph of a data table.
Students will then be provided bags of M&Ms to create a data table.
Students will have to answer questions about the composition of the
bag, and provide a graph of the bag. Students will share information to
establish how other bags differ in composition. Spreadsheet will consist
of a histogram, and pie chart. Students will display the mean M&M. At
the end of the lesson students will complete articles from the previous
class.
Instruction/Modeling: The lesson prepares students for more
complex experiments by familiarizing them with spreadsheets and
reviewing data collection.
Guided student practice/Formative assessment: Students will
practice spreadsheet design with teacher.
Independent practice/Formative assessment: Students will gather
information on M&Ms and create a descriptive spreadsheet.

Closure: Students will be able to create a usable table of data and

create a spreadsheet of displaying the data.
Summative assessment: Students will be able to express a selection
of data in a uniform fashion and display the research visually and
accurately.
Risk Analysis: If projector fails, students may use shared document. If
the Internet fails, students will practice data collection, and calculate
statistics by had.
