Sales Tax and Income Tax
Knowledge: Get students to explain to me that when they
pick an item price tag reads $2.00 but at the register the clerk says total is
$2.17.
Comprehension: Getting them to understand that the state and
local government put sales tax on most items.
Sales tax rates may change.
Application: Pull up an ad from Academy sports store, let
them pick 5 items. Then they have to
figure subtotal, sales tax amount, and total for all 5 items.
Analysis: Discuss with
students how to convert percentage to decimal and multiply to find sales tax amount.
Synthesis: Stress the importance that sales tax amount is ADDED to subtotal.
Evaluation: Complete a few examples from book, page 405.

Sales Tax and Income Tax
Knowledge: Get students to explain to me why they earned
$240 per week at their summer job making $10 per hour, but they only bring home
$213.60?
Comprehension: Getting them to understand that workers must
pay a yearly federal income tax. This
money is taken from ones gross pay, adjusting their net pay.
Application: Getting the students to pick a summer job, they
will make $10 an hour. Then investigate
with students the different ranges for federal withholding percentages. (http://payroll.wsu.edu/taxes/howto.htm
)
Analysis: Discuss with
students how to convert percentage to decimal and multiply to find federal
withholdings amount, as well as medicare, social security, and etc..
Synthesis: Since we are discussing
federal withholding, stress the importance that this amount will be subtracted from
subtotal.
Evaluation: Complete a few examples from book, page 406.

Complete guided and independent practice, pages 408-409 1-12.
