Desmos Drawing Project Reflection
Initially I went about drawing this image originally by starting with a brainstorm of
what I wanted to draw. Caitlyn helped me find that a lacrosse stick would be an easy
image to create while still using all of the functions correctly. I used a pattern when I was
making the mesh, this was all similar functions such as y=5 with some restrictions to
keep the lines within the lacrosse head. I had to experiment at first because I was
thinking about making to lacrosse sticks cross, but the I would have had to tilt my
parabolas and that would have been too confusing to do alone while I was in Denver for
lacrosse. I consulted with Caitlyn on the day that I left and showed my final to Ben
Malone and he helped critique it for me.
This drawing project really helped me understand function families because I
now understand how to manipulate lines on a graph using actual functions! I now
understand how to reflect things by changing negatives and positives. For example,
when creating the lacrosse head I had to use a quadratic function to create my
parabola, and then I had to mirror/create the opposite thing to make the top of the
lacrosse head. Also, when I was creating the butt end of the lacrosse shaft I had to
mirror the segment of my cubic function by making the function negative, and then
changing the restriction to make it to the other side. This gave me some trouble initially
but through some solid troubleshooting I was able to persevere and accomplish my
goal. I have always felt like I am pretty solid with linear functions, and this was proven to
me when I had to push really hard to finish all of the linear equations while I was making
the lacrosse heads mesh.
