Unit 4 - Desmos Drawing Project with Function Families

Reflection:
a. How did you go about drawing this image?
When this project was first introduced my first thought was to draw a landscape. I knew that I
would be able to incorporate all of the types of lines and would be able to use an image as a
reference/trace. I looked up landscapes on Google Images and my favorite one was the one
that I ended up using; a dock on a lake. I used linear, quadratic, and cubic formulas and
restricted them to have the drawing look like the picture I was using. I ended up using 240
different functions to create the final drawing. It took a while to figure what formulas I was going
to use for separate parts of the drawing and then actually incorporate them but I think it worked
out well in the end.

b. How did using Desmos and creating this drawing help you understand function
families and their transformations?
I definitely think that with all of the time that I put in and all the different types of functions I used
and how I applied them to get what I wanted has increased my knowledge of functions,
specifically linear, circle, quadratic, and cubic, substantially. By using all of the functions for a
specific purpose multiple times I definitely understand how those four functions work and how to
use them. Before this project I only really understood linear functions but now I think that I also
have a pretty firm grasp on circle and quadratic functions. I can comfortably create equations to

create the line that I want and I think that is extremely important in the understanding of these
functions.
