Unit: Bringing Poetic Stories to Life


Daily Lesson Plan: Day 6 (Full Lesson)
Daily Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify personification in
a text
Daily Formative Assessment:
Students will brainstorm three ideas for personification poem and will do a
worksheet on personification
Materials Needed:
Pen/pencil
Journal
PowerPoint
Access to YouTube
Brown Girl Rising
Writing with Personification worksheet
Vocabulary sheet
Activities:
1. Students will discuss their recent reading of Brown Girl Rising and hand
in their five spoken word ideas. The latter will be handed back at the
end of class.
10 minutes.
2. Teacher will play Sarah Kays The Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire
without giving the title away. When the poem is done have students
discuss the poem and figure out which inanimate object was writing
the love letter and to which inanimate object.
10 minutes
3. Tell students the objects and then re-watch the poem. Have them write
down the things they hear that go along with the objects. Discuss what
they wrote down.
5 minutes
4. Show them the PowerPoint slide with definition. Have them write it on
their vocabulary list. Then, have someone give an example and write it
on the slide.
5 minutes
5. Hand out Writing with Personification sheets and guide them through
it. This should prove to be helpful for coming up with their on
personification sentences.
15 minutes

6. Hand them the rubric for the personification poem and have them start
brainstorming for this poem. They have to have three ideas by
tomorrow.
5 minutes
Accommodations:
For Student A, I will make sure she has enough time to write down the
vocabulary word. She should have enough time to think about things that
show personification in the video but if not, I will let her know that it is okay,
especially since we will be discussing it in class. I will remind Student B to
bring all of her work for tomorrow.
