Culture:
OI 6: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have lived in Australia for tens of thousands of
years and experiences can be viewed through historical, social and political lenses.

INQUIRY QUESTION: What kind of people made up the Moreton Bay Colony and
what were their lives like before and after they arrived?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability
to:
Describe the different people who lived in the Moreton Bay Colony
Compare and contrast the lives of the different people who lived in the Moreton
Bay Colony
Compare and contrast the past of the lives of the people who lived in Moreton
Bay and where they lived before coming to Moreton Bay

STUDENTS PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:


In previous lessons students will have learnt about the formation of convict colonies in
the Moreton Bay region and also the New South Wales colony.

LESSON PROCEDURE:
Motivation and Lesson Introduction
1. The following question is on the power point, what kind of people would be part
of the Moreton Bay colony?
2. Students are to discuss this question in their groups and write their answers in
their social science journal and also post their answer on Nearpod using their
iPads
3. What countries would these people be from? This question will then be up on
the power point and students are to brain storm as a class
4. Once brainstorming has been completed students will come up to the board
where they will take a card from the board.

Lesson Content

5. Students are to turn over the card which they pick from the board where they
will discover a persons name and the country which they came from before
they made it to Moreton Bay and what their role in the colony is convict,
guard, child or free settler.
6. Students separate into their specific groups convicts, guards, children, free
settlers and take with them their journals and a pencil and their iPad.
7. Students are then to create a character profile using the Character app which
allows students to build their character and design their looks, hobbies etc.
8. Students are to brainstorm and research what life would have been like from
the perspective of the person they chose. There will be a list of websites on site
hoover which will have facts about the countries where people came from
before Moreton Bay back in that time period and also websites about life in the
colony

9. Students are to then write a comparison in their journal between their


characters life in their country of origin and their life in Moreton Bay in the
perspective of their character.

Lesson Conclusion
10. Students will gather on the floor to discuss their characters point of view on the
differences between their old life and their new life in Moreton Bay

ASSESSMENT/EVALUTION OF STUDENT LEARNING:


Formative assessment through the use of the students social science journal entries
and their contribution to the class discussions

Colonial People Worksheets.

who finish a task quickly. These worksheets are designed to create thinking skills
related to Activities found in the book.
