Definition of chlorophyta
Chlorophyta is a division of green algae, called chlorophytes.
In older classification systems, it refers to a highly paraphyletic group of
all the green algae within the green plants (Viridiplantae) that includes
about 7,000 species of aquatic photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms.
Green algae consider as ancestor of present living plant (higher plant):
common characteristic between green algae and land plants.
i.
Same photosynthetic pigments: chlorophyll a & b
ii.
Storage product: starch
iii.
Starch stored: inside chloroplast
iv.
Thylakoids stacked (lamellae)
v.
Major cell wall component: cellulose
Definition of chlorophyta
In newer classifications, it refers to one of the
two clades making up the Viridiplantae,
I. Chlorophytes
II. Streptophytes
a)
Charophycea
b)
Embryophcea
) In this sense the Chlorophyta includes only about 4,300
species.

to each other both in growth form and in vegetative structure.
