Ancient India Architecture (Temples)

By: Simran Dhaliwal

Ancient India had many interesting temples. The

temples were made of many different materials, had
many sculptures and styles.
First of all, ancient Indian temples were made of
many different materials. Buddhist temples were
carved on the side of cliffs, so they were taking away
stone instead of building with stone. It was easier to
take away stone. In the Guptan Empire architects
began to build with stone. These were mainly Hindu
temples.
Also India had many sculptures carved on/in the
temples. Each part of India had different types of
sculptures on the temples. In central India the
sculptures were known for the amazing
craftsmanship and the complex design. In Northern
India the sculptures are images of gods and
goddesses, chunky flora, and beautifully carved
gateways. In Southern India the outside was basically
covered in sculptures.
Lastly, there are many styles of temples. In
Northern India the temple towers were beehive
shaped. In South India there was a pyramidal roof of
one or more stories, and a porch that covered and
proceeded to the door that enters the worshipping
area.
Obviously, ancient India had many interesting
temples with many different types of materials,
sculptures, and styles.
