I am interested in creating a classroom where students feel that they are able to take away

concepts and ideas that they can then apply towards their own academic interests,
whether their academic discipline be in a STEM field, Humanities or Social Sciences. I
believe that a composition class can address all of these needs through creating wirting
projects that not only allow students leeway to pursue their own interests but also
encourage students to pursue their own interests. In terms of the atmosphere in my
classroom, I attempt to blend lecture and discussion. I view lecture as a time in which I
clarify expectations and difficult concepts for students. Discussion is a time in which I
prompt students to synthesize concepts and relate classroom material to their own
academic interests. Likewise, students should feel comfortable discussing their ideas in
small groups as well as suggesting ideas to the larger group. In addition, I encourage
students to interact with me on a one on one basis because each student has their own
unique set of issues with writing and it would be impossible for me to enable each
students to be aware of their own struggles and establish a dialogue about what
knowledge or advice they need from me to fix these problems in the long term.
