Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will discuss in groups the differences and similarities between the
novel, The Hobbit, and its movie adaptation.
Instructional Objectives: Students will use their knowledge from what they have read from the
novel, The Hobbit, and compare and contrast it with its movie adaptation.

Students will review what they have read (ch.1-6) and what they have seen from the movie in
order to prepare for this lesson.
Students will be grouped together in order to complete the worksheet Book and Movie
Comparison/Contrast Guide and discuss between each other.

Anticipatory Activity for Lesson:

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:
Students will discuss the similarities and the differences between the novel, The Hobbit,
and the movie adaptation in small groups, and finally come together to discuss what
they have learned.
Modeling:
I will give them an example of what I am looking for in their discussions and the
answers on their worksheets.
Guided Practice:
I will go around the classroom and answer any questions that any student or group
might have during their discussions.
Independent Practice:
Students will come together in small groups and discuss the similarities and differences
between the movie and the novel. They will complete the worksheet Book and Movie
Comparison and Contrast Guide.
Lesson Closure:
We will come together at the end of the class period in order to review and discuss what
their answers were, and compare every groups answers.
Assessment Methods/Strategies:
Students will be graded more on their participation and the amount of material that
they contribute to their individual groups.
